Task one: definition

What is pre-production

Pre-production is the process of planning some of the elements involved in a film, television show, play, or other performance, as distinct from production, and post-production. Pre-production ends when the planning ends and the content starts being produced.

what is the purpose of carrying out pre-production

Pre-production is the process of gathering everything you need before actual production starts, which makes it an essential phase of the film making process.

This also makes everything organized for when you start filming.

why does pre-production need to take place

Pre-production is everything that happens before you start shooting your feature film, TV series, animation, or anything else. It helps you get organised before you dive into the production process.

what are the requirements for pre production

  • shooting script

  • storyboard

  • script

  • location recce

  • video log sheet

  • sound log

  • risk assessment

  • shooting schedule

  • equipment booking

what is the process involved in pre-production

  1. Casting.

  2. Rehearsal with the actors.

  3. Budgeting.

  4. Scriptwriting.

  5. Location scouting.

  6. Wardrobe.

  7. Prop shopping.

  8. Set design.

what makes pre production different from production

In short, pre-production is where preparations are made for the shoot. Production is where raw elements are recorded and post-production is where the images, sound and other effects of the recorded film are edited.

what makes pre production different from post production

Pre Production, Production and Post Production. In short, pre-production is where preparations are made for the shoot. Production is where raw elements are recorded and post-production is where the images, sound and other effects of the recorded film are edited.

task two: types

Finance

Finance is the amount of money that is going to be spent while creating the film for example if you create a film and have joint financing you get more help making and promoting the film but it will cost more. Some people do have conglomerates help them out these a very popular companies that owns numerous companies involved in mass media enterprises. Finance is all about how you spend your money.

Time

Time is all about how you plan stuff and how you use time to manage them for example this could be stuff like deadlines where time is used to manage how long you have to complete something. Also equipment availability shows how long you should have a certain piece of equipment for. Time makes everything more organised. Time is also used for personal availability so the producers and the everyone that is helping create the film will have an understanding of when someone is available and when someone isn't.

Facilities

Facilities are stuff used to help the whole crew these are stuff like toilets they would have trailers for people and also stuff like food vans this is because these are stuff that you need because when filming it is always a long time so they would need breaks to eat and rest without having to go so far just to get some rest and food because it will be provide at the location of the filming site.

Location

Location is all about where you are going to film but there is a lot of research you have to do after you find the location you want for example the availability of the location you want to film in you have to check the time it opens and closes so you can come at the right time. Some locations require you to book a date first before you show up. You also need to think about the distance the location is not only for you but for your team crew and everyone you have to take into consideration. You would also need to know about the risk in the location it might be a bad neighbourhood the location might be really dirty and unclean this could lead to sickness . You also have to think about the limitations you have to the location making sure you don't use a location were you don't have permission to record.

Personal

For personal you have to think about what crew members you are going to need to help you create the film this is important because you need a crew to help you edit your film also people that can help the crew out by getting water for them and supporting them while filming. Getting the right crew is really important because if you don't get the people you want in the crew and are missing important members it could lead to stuff being unorganised and people being stressed. Another thing that is really important while filming and could be the most important part of the personnel is the actors. Getting the right actors is really important because you would want your film to be the best it can and actors have a huge roll to play in how good the film will turn out. You would want to have people that can edit and that are good at it because editing is a huge part in film making as it puts the whole film together making everything. Lacking editors in a crew can really effect the whole film because it push the date back because editing takes a while and with a little amount of editors it can take a while.

materials

material is the items you have created and have access to an example is audio script, internet, costumes and more. Materials is information in any form this could be information electronic or drawn information

codes of practice & legislation

This is making sure you do everything legally and everything is right an example is copyright you don't want to get sued by copyright because you will lose a lot of money and time that you used to film that scene. So you have to be carful when picking stuff like songs and more so you don't get sued

Task three : example

Task four : sectors

LAA  : core assessment

Budget Breakdown

Format

This is an example of a budget breakdown. You add your budget number at the top and then list everything you need on the side and the amount of money it cost making sure you have enough money for everything you want

Film-Budget-Template-01.jpeg

Function

A budget breakdown is how the team that is creating the film will split the budget between everyone not just actors. The budget breakdown also has to go to the equipment like cameras, props, CGI equipment, editing equipment and more. Budget breakdown also has to be split between the staff that are helping out this could be staff that get all the actors costumes and make done and ready or staff that help set up a scene.

The budget breakdown is how split your budget so that you will end up with a film that is good in all areas you put your money in not just one area. The budget breakdown is really important and without this it would be hard to create a film the budget breakdown is what kickstarts the production for your film.

Purpose

The purpose of the budget breakdown is to make sure that everyone who helped create the film gets paid. Another aim for the budget breakdown is to make sure you invest your budget in the thing that can help your film weather that is actors or your CGI and editing equipment it all depends on the film you are trying to create. Some type of films require more CGI and editing equipment to stand out shows like endgame spend a lot of money on CGI and editing because of all the effects they would need to use.

Risk assessment

Format

risk assessment template.jpeg

The risk assessment is where you dot down all the risk that could happen and how to prevent them and the chances of them happening

Function

For the risk assessment you write down all the possible risk that could happen that could happen at the location you are filming at and all the risk that could happen getting there. After all the risk have been written down you have to write down how to avoid these risk this is important because you wouldn't want anything to happen while filming which could cost you money or your crew members could get hurt. You also need to know how could get harmed by these risk to try prevent it early and also tell the person about the risk. Then you would need to determine the risk on a scale of what are the chances of that happening. Also actions to take to minimize the risk so that it won't happen at all and also a new risk factor

Purpose

The aim of the risk assessment is to make sure that nothing goes wrong while filming and no one gets harmed so that the shoot can run smoothly with no major interruptions to delay a scene this could also lead to an actor not being able to actor for a while because if the risk assessment isn't assessment well.

Shooting schedule

Format

The type of process you go through while making a shooting script is thinking about the shots and how you want them to be because you can't let them be to long or to short

Function

template shooting script.jpeg

For the shooting script you have to list the order of shots that you are going to use in your film. When you have listed the order of the shots then you name what shots you want to use and name how long the shot will be. After you would give a brief descriptions of what is happening in the camera shot that is being used.

Purpose

The aim of the shooting script is to make sure that everything is organised and that there is no last minute discussions that will confuse the whole script up. Everything would be planned early so that everyone would know what to do before they start filming and all the shots are prepared.

call sheets

Format

Avenir Light is a clean and stylish font favored by designers. It's easy on the eyes and a great go-to font for titles, paragraphs & more.

Function

Put simply, call sheets are given to your cast and crew in advance of a day's shoot and they tell each crew member everything they need to know about a given shooting day, including location details, scenes to be shot, crew member phone numbers, times, necessary props or special effects, weather details, and more.

call sheet tem.jpeg

Purpose

The aim for the call sheet is to make sure that everyone is ready for the shot. The call sheet also makes sure that everyone brings what they need to bring what time they should be there. This is really important because everyone needs organized for the shoot and no one forgets anything.

shot list

format

The process that happens when making a shot list is you have to thing of the first shot you are going to use and the characters and the audio in that camera shot then you go on from there using the shots that you think are right for the audio and the scene

shot list.jpeg

Function

The shot list is a more detailed shooting script. In the shot list it has audio, script, camera angle, description of shot. The description of the shot is in more detail

Purpose

The aim of the shot list is to let everyone knows that is working on the scene what is happening. This includes what characters are meant to be in the scene what type of camera angle is going to be used. The aim is to make everything clear on what is going on in the scene.

Storyboard

Format

The process you have to go to when making a storyboard would be drawing the scenes and describing what is going on in the scenes the audio that is being and also the camera technique used.

Function

storyboard.webp

A storyboard is a visual of a scene this is normally a drawn image of the scene and what is going. Also they would say the type of camera technique used in the shot the audio as well weather it is a voice over sound track or dialogue. They would also have a brief descriptions of the shot

Purpose

The aim for the storyboard is for the people viewing it to build an image in their head of what would be going on in the scene because there would be an image for them to try image the scene.

Mock ups/layouts

Format

mock up.png

Function

The function of the mock up is like a storyboard but all the scenes will be in order and all the scenes would link with the other scenes. The mock up is what the product will look like when filmed.

Purpose

The purpose of the mock up is for you to have an idea to stick to when creating the film so that you won't have to change your mind all the time and have a final decision that is clear to you and everyone else.

Location recce

Format

The type of process you would have to go through is looking at images to see how the location looks. You would need to find out information like the contact number the site access and more. You would also need to try find out about the personal uses around the area like toilet access, parking and more.

Function

locaion reece temp.png

How the location recce works is you would need up to three different images of the location you are going to film in and the information of the location. The information you would need would be stuff like site address, site contact, contact number, site access, site availability.

You would also need to know if there are any personal uses for the whole crew this includes electricity supply, space for working, available toilets, available parking and amenities food/drink. These are the things you would need to list in the location recce.

Purpose

The aim for the location recce is for the whole crew to know about the location before they go there. This is important because you need to know about the environment that you are going to be filming in. If you went to film in a place you knew nothing about because you done no research on it it can really go work because you might not have any parking nearby or no space for working.

Equipment booking

Format

equipment booking.jpg

Function

How equipment booking works is there would be a list of different pieces of equipment this could be cameras, batteries, charger, microphones and more.

You have to make sure that you tick the piece of equipment you want.

Most of the time the piece of equipment would be very specific so that when you tick it they know which exact one you want.

Purpose

The purpose of the equipment booking is for you to know what equipment you want and what you will need. It is also there so that the people you are borrowing the equipment from know what equipment you need when you need it and why you need it.

Script

Function

How the script works is that the create would write the lines of the actors and also add any sound affects. This is not all in the script he would also add when a scene changes so if they move from one room to the other. Everything that goes down in the scene would be written in the script.

script.png

Purpose

The purpose of the script is for the actors to know what to say and when to say it. It is also used to let everyone know what is going to happen in that scene and when the location is going to change. The script lets them know how the story goes and unfolds.

Sound log

Function

How a sound log works is you would write what scene you would need it for and what take it was when you recorded the sound. You would also need to add notes this could you be saying if the recording was ruined by cars or a plane etc. You would also need to add what type of sound technique was used for example it could be a voice over and also how long the sound goes on for.

sound log.jpg

Purpose

The purpose of the sound log is for the crew to get information out of how the sound was recorded which sound would better fit a specific scene and the amount of time it took to get that perfect sound.

Video log

Function

How a video log works is you would put down what scene it is that you recorded after that what take it was. Some scenes would have more takes than others so you would write how many takes it took to film that scene showing all the takes numbering them. After you would add a shot description explaining the camera technique used then you would make comments about the shot saying weather it can be used or not if not you have to say what is the problem with the shot.

video log.jpg

Purpose

The purpose of this not only for the editors to know which shot was good and bad but it also lets them know what they need to know about shots without going through all the shots to find the one that they think would be perfect for a scene.

LAB+C: CORE ASSESSMENT

Risk Assessment

On a scale of 1 to 10 on how useful the risk assessment was on 4 the reason for this is because all of us are aware of the risk that could happen in the location. Another reason I gave it a 4 is because there weren’t any major risk that could happen in that location most of them are all low risks.

But on the other hand it allowed us to realise the possible risk that could take place in the location so that we still go to the location knowing what risk could still take place.

Shooting schedule

On a scale of 1 to 10 on how useful the shooting schedule was I would give it a 8 the reason I gave the shooting schedule an 8 is because it helps organize everything which is very important in the media industry you need things to be organized so that things can go smoothly and to plan. The shooting schedule allows everything to be organized.

The shooting schedule allows everyone to know what needs to be done and when without all of this things could go all over the place people might leave their task till later on which wouldn’t be good for the company or the media product you are making.

Shot list

On a scale of 1 to 10 on how useful the shot list was I would give it a 10 the reason for this is because it allows the camera operator to know how long a shot is going to be what type of shot they are going to be taking and what is happening in the scene. Without the shot list everything would be unplanned and the camera operator wouldn’t know what camera technique to use and how long a shot should be. Time could also be wasted because you would be trying to figure out the right type of shot to use when you could have planned it first and gets things done quicker.

Storyboard

On a scale of 1 to 10 on how useful the storyboard is I would also give it a 10 the reason for this is because the storyboard is another version of a shot list but instead you get to see an image of how the shot should be shown. This helps the camera operator understand the scene even more and because he will understand it he can do the shot exactly how it is shown. The storyboard also helps to make sure everyone knows what they are doing this includes the whole crew the actors, camera operator and director. The storyboard also allows people to know what they should be hearing in that scene this could be diegetic or non-diegetic audio or it could be dialogue.

Location recce

On a scale of 1 to 10 on how useful the storyboard is I would give it a 8 out of 10 the reason for this is because if you don’t do your research into a place you know nothing about you would waste time exploring the place trying to find good places to film a certain scene on the other hand if you done your research on the location you will already know what scenes need to be filmed in certain areas saving you time to record extra scenes you need or you could leave early.

The location recce also allows us to know any extra information we need for example toilet availability, car parking availability, electric supply’s (plugs and outlets) and many more information. Also, information on the company that is letting you use the location to film.

Equipment list

On a scale of 1 to 10 on how important the equipment list is I give it a 7 the reason for this is because you need to know before hand what type of equipment you will be needing so that when it is time for you to collect or buy the equipment you already know what you need and don’t forget anything.

If you can remember everything you need an equipment booking wouldn’t really matter but it is still helpful so that you don’t forget anything and you are sure on everything you get.

Script

On a scale of 1 to 10 on how important the script is I give it a 10 the reason for this is because the script holds the dialogue that is need for actors without the script there would be no dialogue and the actors would have nothing to say the script also tells them what they are doing in the scene and the emotion they should deliver the line with.

The script is very important and useful because dialogue helps create a story in a show with dialogue and that is where dialogue comes from the script.

Sound log

On a of 1 to 10 on how important the sound log is I give it a 7 the reason for this is because audio is really important in a lot of media related products examples are news reports where you need to hear what the report is saying, music videos or even tv shows and films. The sound log helps you organize the sound that is going to be used in the final product.

Video Log

On a scale of 1 to 10 on how important and useful the video log sheet is I would give it 6 out of 10 the reason for this is because it helps the editor know what clips are good to be used and what aren’t this helps save the editor time while also giving him the information he needs instead of him going through all the clips himself.

Budget breakdown

A budget breakdown is very important and useful the reason for this is because it helps you manage your money really well so that you don't over spend your budget. It is also important because you don't want to waste to much money on a certain area and then be left with no money in the other areas for example spending all your money on costumes and props and you will be left with no money for the equipment for your cameras and sound equipment etc. So because of that i do think that the budget breakdown is very important it also keeps everything very organized.

Call sheet

A call sheet is very important and really useful in pre production the reason for this is because it lets the actors know everything they need for example where to be for the next shoot keep everyone organized and everyone ahead of what they need to do so no time is wasted. Not only does the call sheet let them know about the what is going on in the scene but also the weather conditions and parking keeping so that everyone is ready for the next day. That is why the call sheet is so important.

Mock up

I would say a mock up isn't as important because you should already have an understanding of what you are doing or making a mock up can be helpful to a few people to help them understand the assessment more and help them make something better.

Learning aim D

Risk assessments

The pros of the risk assessment were that we went to record fully understanding what danger is around the area we are filming in so that there are no injuries that happen that slow down production or stop it from happening that day and because of the risk assessment there where no injuries to cause delay to our recording leading to a positive day of filming.

A con to the risk assessment was that the risk around the area wasn’t that much or any major risk because of this it didn’t really have such an impact on the outcome of the short film.

A strength to the outcome of the risk assessment was that because of the risk assessment no one got hurt leading to a good day of filming.

Another strength is that since the risk assessment was made and there were no accidents because everyone already knew all the risks it saves time in production.

Shot list

The pros of the shot list were that because of the shot list we were able to go into filming knowing exactly what to do and how we want to do it. The outcome of the shot list was positive because we had already planned out how we wanted certain scenes and because of that we where able to capture a lot of scenes.

A con to the shot list was that since we had already planned out what type of shots we wanted to do in certain scenes when we started recording, we changed up some of the shots the reason this was a con was because it affected the storyline on how certain stuff looked but also took us a while to film certain scenes.

Strengths where that we where able to capture the shots we wanted to use all the important shots that we thought would be the best for certain scenes.

A weakness is that in some scenes we wouldn’t know which shot would be best for the scene so we put down more camera angles for the same scene to see which one would be the best the reason why this was a con for the outcome was because we spent to much time on one scene when we could have work on other scenes and not waste time.

Storyboard

The pros of the storyboard are that it gives us a more detailed understanding of how we want the shots to look like. The outcome of the storyboard was that we knew where we wanted characters to stand or where they want to face making the shots look like the ones in the storyboard so that it is accurate to the storyboard and the best way to present it.

A con to the storyboard would be that some of the scenes on the storyboard might not have been drawn to the best standard so it would be unclear to the director to what should be happening in a scene or where characters should be standing. This leads to a bad outcome for example if the character is on the right, then on the left it doesn’t make sense.

A strength of the outcome from a storyboard was that it allowed us to know the correct positions for the characters and objects and it also allowed our envisioned ideas to be filmed and made.

A weakness from the outcome of the storyboard was that not all scenes in the storyboard was drew to well this meant that in some scenes we could have to try come up with a fresh scene on the spot or try to find a way to understand what is going on in that scene.

Script

A pro to the outcome was that most actors where able to learn their lines for certain scenes and when it was time to say their lines it was clear and fit the type of emotion for example if they had to say hello in a sad tone the script would let them know what type of tone to say their line in.

A con was that not in some of the scenes the actors weren’t loud enough this meant that the audience won’t be able to hear them that well when background music is playing. The effect this had on the outcome was that we would have to find a way to edit the audio to try get it as clear as possible This could also lead us to retaking shots how these effects the outcome is that it will lead us to take many different shots trying to get the right audio which will waste time and we won’t get all our shots.

The strengths from the outcome of the shot list are that since most of the actors already knew their lines it helps the dialogue in the short film and gives a real story and a deeper understanding to it.

A weakness is that if your script isn’t clear or doesn’t make sense it will make your short film and all the dialogue comes from the script and since dialogue is important in a short film if it isn’t done properly your short film won’t be up to standers.

Equipment list

A pro to the equipment booking is that it makes sure that you get all the right stuff for recording so that you get the outcome you won’t. For example, the equipment booking allows you to get the right camera you need and gives you the quality you need for your outcome.

A con is that if you make a mistake on the equipment list and forget to tick what you need it might it could lead to your video missing stuff you need for example if you tick the wrong microphone, you need the audio might come out wrong.

A strength of the equipment list was that because we had already taken note of the equipment, we needed we were prepared and already knew what we will need to take so that we can get the best outcome to our short film.

A weakness that could have affected our outcome is if we didn’t tick the equipment we need to for if we forgot to tick something important to the short film it will either lead it to the short film being bad or delayed because we have to book the equipment again.

Location recce

A pro to the outcome of our location recce was that because of the research we had done into the location we already knew the order we wanted to film in the reason this was a pro to the outcome was because of this we was able to set up the lights, cameras and props in place we need them so this helped us manage our time better and get the important shots we need.

A con to the outcome of the location recce could be that if you don’t put the right contact details down for where you are going to film for example contact number, email or website you might not be able to reach them again if you need to reschedule or ask them questions about something you might not be able to reach them the reason this could affect the outcome is because you might have to find a new location to film in this will make you waste time.

A strength of the outcome from the location recce was that we were able to get the important shots because we already knew what we had to film in certain places.

A weakness of the outcome was that in some rooms there was not enough space to fit some lights in the room the actors and cameramen, so this meant that in some shots we weren’t able to get the best possible scenes for certain shots.
